Frequently asked questions:

What is sustainability?

In simple terms and according to the Brundtland Commission, sustainability is a type of development that takes equaly into consideration the economical, environmetal and social aspects of a project. In real life it is rarely/not exactly the case so sustainability initiatives in the corporate world tend to refer more about efforts by corporations to address their own and/or generic environmental/social issues.

Why did SBR embark on sustainability?

SBR has been involved in the sustainability agenda since the very start. The owner coming from a construction background wanted to demonstrate that it is feasable to develop a project while preserving the original site to great extents, minimize the impacts and overtime develop the company in line with a more sustainable business model.

Is SBR the only sustainable hotel in Singapore?

We do not claim that. However, we think SBR is unique by providing a one of a kind environment and the efforts been put to showcase and testbed sustainable development models.

Do I need to be an hotel guest to participate in SBR's sustainability programs?

Not at all, most of our programs are available to all. For instance our eco tours are provided for free to whoever wants to attend (we do have group size limitations). For any query about the ecotours please refer to the eco tour section of the site.

I want to learn more about your sustainability efforts, who should I contact?

Yes, we conduct workshops for starting a vermicomposting venture. However, these are subject to the number of people attending a course (we have group size limits).

Do you provide free venues for sustainable events?

No, SBR is still a business and we need to sustain ourselves financialy through operational incomes. However, once in a while SBR organizes its own event on the topic of sustainability and invites selected participants.

Do you provide training outside of the resort?

On rare occasions yes. However, we preffer to host stakeholders on-site instead so that they can see the changes in operation rather than just having us talking about it.
